Background

Ontologies

Why Ontologies?

  • Maximize efficiency by providing control to domain experts
  • Provide the required flexibility to adjust to changing scenarios
  • Allows for established, ad hoc, local, and remote clients and process to work seamlessly
  • Provides a persistent searchable information store

The Semantic Web and OWL
OWL (Ontology Web Language)
2004 W3C Recommendation for Semantic Web Designed for applications that need to process the content of information instead of just presenting information to humans.

  • Information is represented within a knowledge structure
  • Built in methods for information linking
  • Complete knowledge of information schema NOT required
  • Based upon XML and RDF
  • Adds more vocabulary for describing properties and classes:
    • relations between classes (e.g. disjointness)
    • cardinality (e.g. "exactly one")
    • equality, richer typing of properties
    • characteristics of properties (e.g. symmetry)
    • enumerated classes
